Moneyweb editor Ryk van Niekerk took top honours at the landmark 50th Annual Sanlam Group Awards for Excellence in Financial Journalism on Thursday night in Sandton, winning the overall Journalist of the Year Award.

Regarded as one of SA’s top financial journalists, Van Niekerk also won the award in the broadcast audio/radio category for Moneyweb’s RSG Geldsake show (Palesa Matlala is the show’s producer).

Moneyweb produces the show for the Afrikaans-language SABC radio station.

Van Niekerk has been a finalist in the awards for several years. In addition to the award in the audio/radio category, he was a finalist in the consumer financial education category and named first runner-up. Moneyweb journalist Ciaran Ryan was second runner-up in the same category.

SA’s longest-running and most coveted awards campaign in the financial media space, the Sanlam Group Awards for Excellence in Financial Journalism, has expanded to include the whole continent since 2013.

Sapoa Award

It was a big, award-winning night on Thursday for Moneyweb.

Besides Van Niekerk’s Sanlam awards, fellow ‘Moneyweber’ Antoinette Slabbert won the award for Property Feature Journalist of the Year at the 2025 South African Property Owners Association (Sapoa) Excellence in Property Journalism Awards. She received the accolade at the Sapoa Convention in Sun City.

Moneyweb’s operations director, Mosehla Gwangwa-Tsebe, hailed the award-winning financial journalism work of Van Niekerk and Slabbert.

“Antoinette’s award is a powerful testament to her commitment to telling the truth behind every story. Her ability to cut through complexity and bring clarity to readers sets her apart as one of South Africa’s leading journalists in the property space,” she said.

“Ryk’s recognition at the Sanlam Financial Journalism Awards is a true reflection of his unwavering dedication to quality journalism,” added Gwangwa-Tsebe.

“His commitment to telling stories that matter, with clarity and integrity, continues to inspire our entire team at Moneyweb. These awards are not only a personal achievement but also a reminder of the high standards he sets for us all,” she added.

Big year

It has been a significant and highly successful past year for Moneyweb.

The RSG Geldsake show also won the coveted Best Business and Finance Show title at the 2024 Telkom SA Radio Awards in December 2024. It may not be a well-known fact, but RSG Geldsake is the largest business radio show in South Africa. It is broadcast at 6pm every weekday on RSG 102fm.

In addition to Van Niekerk and Matlala, the RSG Geldsake core team includes Tinus de Jager, a stand-in host for the show, and sound engineer Piet Botha.
